Point cloud data is a set of 3D data consisting of many points. It can be obtained by 3D laser scanners or other methods. Point cloud data is widely used in surveying and mapping, building renovation, and archaeological relics. It can capture 3D measurements of real-world objects with precision and detail and be seamlessly integrated into CAD projects for precise modeling and design. It helps users obtain information faster, reduce errors, and improve design accuracy.
In ZWCAD 2024, we introduced the Point Cloud function that enables you to read and process complex point cloud data smoothly. It can display up to 50 million points at the same time, almost twice as many as the competition. Apart from that, this module offers many useful functions to fulfill diverse needs. In this article, we will dive into this feature and explore it capabilities.
Seamless File Import
You can effortlessly import point cloud files by attaching them as external references. Currently, it supports a wide range of file formats, including RCS, RCP, E57, LAS, LAZ, and PTS.

Customizable Visual Presentation
The level of detail and point size can be adjusted, allowing you to fine-tune the visual noise for optimal display effects.

Various Styling and Visualization Options
Each point in the point cloud can be individually stylized by altering the point color style. Moreover, transparency adjustments enable users to have different visualization degrees. These attribute settings ensure effective conveying of the point cloud‘s characteristics so you can understand them better.

Versatile Point Cloud Cropping
You can crop point clouds based on polygonal, rectangular, or circular boundaries. This feature enables you to remove unwanted data or extract regions of interest for more efficient processing and analysis.

Advanced Sectioning Capabilities
You can obtain the projection or section of a plane or curved surface. After that, you can extract one or more intersection lines from the section plane to represent the outline of the section. This help you further analyze the internal structure or shape of 3D objects.
